World We Imagine - Part 3
The Social Media Hotline
Almost 20% of American adults experience mental illness. Where over half of these adults receive no treatment. The most common of these disorders are anxiety and depression related. Now mental health stems from a variety of causes, but the one I want to bring your attention to today is the use of social media.
Us humans are social creatures. We thrive on companionship, strong connections and it is proven that being socially connected with others eases anxiety, depression, stress, boosts self-worth, provides comfort and joy and prevents loneliness. Lacking strong social connections, of course, poses a risk to your mental and emotional health. Social media was launched as a way to deeper these social connections- that way we are connected even when we aren't together. Now with actions like Instagram stories and platforms like BeReal, you are aware of what others are doing almost all the time. This is good. Now we can be more connected than ever. But the virtual world is nothing like the real one, and while these platforms started as a place to almost rival human connection, spending too much time engaging with social media tends to make us feel more loneliness and isolated.
50% of mental illness begins by age 14 - just around the same time that children begin to use social media. Engaging with this media at a young age develops online habits that can later on lead to an excessive amount of time on social media. That's why we created The Social Media Hotline, a 24/7 line that not only reminds you when to get off social media but acts a support line that you can text if ever you feel the negative effects of social media. These include but are not limited to the following:
- Inadequacy about your life or appearance
- Fear of missing out (FOMO) and social media addiction
- Isolation
- Depression and anxiety
- Cyberbullying
- Self-absorption
The goal of The Social Media Hotline is to help you reposition social media in your life. How it influences your day to day, and your virtual relationships with others. ADMP should invest in us because we are offering a practical solution to the mental negative impacts of social media. With our reminders and support line we hope to directly modify our users social media use starting with reducing time online, changing your focus, and indirectly increasing the time you spend with offline friends.
